History: Jake's background

Personality:

POSITIVE

  • Adaptability -  Jake's powers are intrinsically linked to his ability to go with the flow and adjust on the fly. Being able to assess changes in a situation and react quickly is the only thing standing between himself and death, more often than not. This extends to beyond his physical life, resulting in Jake's strong interest in the arts, meditation/spirituality, self-actualization, and philosophy. He believes that life is a series of experiences, good and bad and neutral, and that value can be derived from all of them with the right perspective.

  • Wisdom & Empathy -  Jake has lived a very full life and values fully appreciating the experiences it's presented to him, resulting in a seemingly endless wellspring of advice for those around him. That includes everything from talking through basic life stuff to empathy for people in differing circumstances. His moral code is not absolute and instead based on individuals and their unique situation. This is a reflection of Jake's own path; he is defined as much by his past experiences as his current ones. His 20s were especially volatile and he exhibited a lot of questionable behavior (stealing, running scams, engaging in pick-up artistry, possessing the world's hugest ego) that he now looks back on with cringing self-reflection.

The death of his parents and subsequent responsibility to raise his (comparatively slow-aging) little brother spurred a reevaluation and reinvention of himself, but Jake is very aware that those negative impulses persist despite a person's best intentions. Jake views self-improvement as a lifelong effort. This ties into his spiritual beliefs and his views on death/reincarnation. The personal philosophy he espouses is something he has acquired through reading books and looking inward, meaning it is intellectual rather than innate. He often fails to practice what he preaches. Also, sometimes his advice just stinks. Nobody's infallible.
  • Loyalty -  Being a dog, this one is kind of a given. Jake is a consummate bro, your ride or die, the guy who's gonna answer the call at 3AM and come sit with you while you cry over your ex's Instagram. Once you've earned his respect and friendship, there isn't much you can do to lose it. This extends as far as giving up on things that are hugely important to him, or enduring things he actively hates, purely to make sure he's there in case the worst should happen.

NEGATIVE

  • Unfocused -  Jake's inability to focus is his greatest downfall. To cite AT's series creator, his cognition issues mirror adult-stage ADHD. If people/tasks are not physically in front of him, they can slide so far off his radar they may as well not exist. This extends to even the people he loves most in the world and results in a strained (but improving) relationship with his adult children. Self-motivation in the face of urgency is also challenge for him, often backsliding into more immediately entertaining distractions than focusing on the most urgent problem at hand. Jake is more than capable to focus voraciously, but often only when it comes to his hobbies/interests. Anything Jake deems personally "boring" is actively painful for him to sit through and his mind will be elsewhere almost immediately.

  • Lazy -  A life spent being able to get out of pretty much any situation by simply stretching has kind of permanently altered Jake's brain chemistry. Why get up to get a glass of water when you can just stretch your mouth to the spigot. He loves to sleep, he loves to eat, and the adventuring life isn't actually one he's choose for himself if Finn wasn't such an aspiring hero. At times, this can result in him cutting corners or willing himself to believe things are fine when they are demonstrably not, purely so he doesn't have to deal with them.

This stuntedness also manifests in other parts of his life, to the detriment of his personal relationships. To quote his son Kim Kil Whan, Jake lives "the life of a teenager" by refusing to get a job or apply himself towards the kind of pursuits typical of someone his age. By chronically avoiding work of any kind, Jake often neglects the emotional work required to be the best father/person he can be.
  • Emotionally Stunted -  While Jake is deeply empathetic to those around him, expressing personal emotions is a fraught topic. Joshua, Jake's father, raised all his sons in an environment where toughness was prized and crying was not tolerated. Neither Jake nor his two brothers came out from this environment unscathed. Being vulnerable and acknowledging his own damage is very challenging for him, preferring to project a version of himself that's unerringly consistent. He chronically tries to make light of deeply dark situations to rob them of their power, even when inappropriate. This extends to protecting people he feels responsible for (specifically Finn) and keeping himself together for their benefit. Jake is quick to try and distract or dodge away from the harsher realities of life, rather than confront them directly. To quote him on the subject, doing that so often is probably messing up his kidneys.

Powers/Abilities:

STRETCHY POWERS
Jake's power is usually referred to as his singular 'stretching' ability, but its applications are numerous and vast. The core subcategories include:

  • Stretching -  What it says on the tin. Jake's body is extremely elastic and he can stretch his body to extremely huge lengths. He has extreme control over localized stretching to specific parts of his body (including bones, teeth, internal organs). He has extreme control over his power in most situations, except when tired/stressed/being actively manipulated by another person. In those situations, his body can often lose stability and result in him turning into a mushy pile and/or stretch to the whims of the other person's strength.

There's a limit to Jake's ability to stretch; eventually his organs/tissue will stretch too thin and he will just straight up die. Whoops.

  • Growing/Shrinking -  Jake can grow to gargantuan sizes and shrink down to a nearly-microscopic level. He can do this while shapeshifting or just as himself.

  • Strength/Density/Durability -  Jake can grow his muscles at will, enabling him to become extremely strong and extremely dense when necessary. He also has the ability to avoid most types of physical damage by simply creating holes in his body/stretching wounds closed/generally being very hard to kill with any sort of piercing damage. This does not apply to blunt force, which can and will absolutely wreck his shit.

  • Shapeshifting -  Jake can stretch himself into objects/animals/people/abstract shapes. This can manifest as growing additional limbs and features or fully shifting into a new unrecognizable shape. In some cases, these objects are functional (such as a car) and other times they are purely aesthetic (Jake can turn into a spyglass, but he can't make himself into a working lens). He can either become these objects fully, or "bud" them off him like extensions of his normal body (i.e. when stretching himself into a car, Jake will usually still be present in the drivers seat "driving"). While he can shapeshift very convincingly, his "creations" are still just made of dog flesh. Most disguised forms won't convince anyone under close scrutiny.

He is also bound by his ability to accurately imagine the objects/creatures/people he turns into. Think of it as an artist learning to draw a horse; your first ones aren't going to be very good but you'll eventually get there.
A natural power-cap for Jake's OP power is his own laziness and the bounds of his ability to remember he can do a specific thing in the moment he needs to do it most. There are plenty of times simply stretching all big will solve any problem, but will Jake remember he can do that when he needs to? 50/50 shot. Maybe 30/70.

DOG POWERS
Despite his yellow blob appearance, Jake is a straight up dog and that comes with certain perks (such as):

  • Heightened Sense of Smell - Jake can detect scents, follow trails long distances, and generally tell what you had for breakfast. He claims his ability to smell is 1,000x that of a normal human (probably not a scientific figure tho).
  • Heightened Hearing - Usually only high-pitched frequencies, though.
  • Fast Runner - On four legs only. If he's walking on two, he better be big or he's gonna be slow.
GENERAL ABILITIES
As a guy who never has (and never will) held a job, Jake is a renaissance dog with dozens and dozens of hobbies. Here's a shortlist of the ones he's shown to have significant skill in:

  • Cooking
  • Viola
    • Viola is absolutely his instrument of choice and one he has dedicated real time to, but he has generalized ability with other instruments as well (guitar, ukulele, drums).
  • Language Learning
    • Fluent: Korean (reading and writing), Braille
    • Passing Familiarity: Japanese, Spanish, French
  • Meditation
  • Knitting
  • Skateboarding
  • Sailing/Nautical Navigation
Regret:

Jake's regret is not making the most of the time when his children were puppies and generally not being there for them enough. If he had to choose a thing to do-over in his life, that would be the one.

Suitability:

Jake's powers are useful across a ridiculous number of applications. He can be used as transportation, tools, disguises, weapon, shield, and anything else you can think of within the bounds of imagination. His ability to change size has huge implications, ranging from covering large distances to using him for stealth. This comes in handy plenty during battles and problem solving in his own world and I'm sure that would continue into Ximilia. But from a non-power perspective, Jake has developed a healthy relationship with struggle and hardship. He frequently meditates, aspires to rid desire from his heart, and practices an abstracted version of Zen Buddhism. Regret is very much a part of his life, not only in that he has them (he does) but that he is often striving to work through them in a healthy way.

That may seem antithetical to Ximilia's premise, but Jake has frequently given up the chance at a life that suits him in service of accompanying people he cares about through their struggles. Dude willingly reincarnates after reaching the highest level of nirvana after death, just so his little brother won't go through his next life alone. Staying aboard the Ximilia for the sake of others' journeys will not be an issue for him.
