The words hung there, a safety rope. Finn knew Jermaine had seen him falter but he couldn't be sure if the same were true of Jake. He could be offering him a convenient excuse, or maybe he genuinely believed that's what had happened...

Finn turns his head, peeking at him from behind his arm, unsure if he wanted to take the excuse and run.
